Distinguished and Famous people from South West Australia
🌿 Georgiana Molloy
Georgiana Molloy settled at Augusta in 1830 and later moved to the Vasse district near present-day Busselton. Amid the demands and losses of family life, she developed an important botanical practice, collecting seeds and specimens for James Mangles in England. Her carefully prepared material reached leading botanists, contributing to European study of south-western Australian plants. Recent scholarship also examines the Wardandi Noongar people with whom she collected, placing the work within its local relationships and colonial setting. Her distinction rests on close observation and demanding practical collecting, rather than a formal scientific appointment. Augusta and the Vasse were the places where that work developed.
🏄 Taj Burrow
Taj Burrow's international surfing career has remained closely tied to Yallingup. Years on the professional tour involved almost continuous travel, but retirement and family life brought longer periods at home and in the local surf. His connection also continues through Taj's Small Fries, the junior event bearing his name. Surfing Western Australia's account of the 2022 competition describes him in the water and on the beach encouraging young competitors as challenging waves tested their confidence. That involvement turns the reputation of an international tour surfer into a local opportunity for others. The South West is both his home surf and a place where younger surfers can encounter the sport through his support.
